Recognizing that children from lower socio-economic backgrounds do not always live in environments conducive to learning, Sharana makes its facilities available for evening classes and homework assistance. Children who have little or no electricity in their homes, or whose evenings are otherwise disrupted by other demands, are then able to come to Sharana’s premises for good atmosphere, the assistance of teachers, and help from Sharana volunteers. Sharana runs its Homework Help Centre at its office covered terrace, with 1-2 teachers and between about 30-35 children, between 5.30 and 7.30pm. Children attending are also provided with milk, and a healthy snack.
This Program helps the children to improve their academic performance at school, by ensuring regular completion of school homework, encouraging group study with friends and sharing. Art and craft and language classes are conducted by volunteers as opportunities arise.
